| Growing seeds in a nursery In many cases, plants are best propagated in a nursery situation and grown into plants that will transplant reliably into a garden. Gardeners can do this at home or buy plants directly from a nursery or plant retailer.
Sowing directly into the ground Some seeds can be sown directly into the soil. There is a note about this on our Revegetation page under Direct Seeding and Hand Direct Seeding. Whether you are sowing seeds over many hectares or a small patch in a garden, the principles of direct seeding remain the same.
Annuals can be grown by direct seeding, but the ground needs to be well-prepared and watering kept up during the germination period (which can be several weeks). If you plan well enough ahead with soil preparation, you can work with the seasons, and with luck, sow the seed in autumn and rely entirely on the first rains for germination.
Our State floral emblem, the common Red and Green Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos manglesii) can be sown like this. Note: This is how Kings Park grows them for the Spring display each year. Although a perennial, the species is treated as an annual.

| Obtaining seed To grow plants
from seed, you will have to obtain seed from the bush in which case you
will require a DEC seed collecting licence, or you will need to buy
seed from a seed retailer like Nindethana (they sell seed to gardeners in small packets), or other seedsmen - ASGAP maintains a list of seed suppliers.
